The Whiting refinery, established in 1889 in North Township's northern most community, is the largest oil refinery in the U.S. Midwest and the eighth largest in the country. Originally built by John D. Rockefeller's Standard Oil Company, it has evolved from a kerosene producer for lamps into a massive 1,400-acre complex processing 435,000–440,000 barrels of crude oil daily.
The refinery currently provides 20 percent to 25 percent of all refined gasoline, jet fuel, and diesel used in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Wisconsin. It also produces roughly 7 percent of all asphalt in the United States.
What in store for the future? The Whiting site is part of the planned Midwest Regional MachH2 hydrogen hub, a project expected to involve up to $8 billion in investment and create 16,000 construction jobs. Learn more at bp.com.
